What is it?
Every autumn, the Spanish Ministry of Health, in coordination with regional health authorities, launches the flu vaccination campaign and, since 2021, also COVID-19. In 2025, a new model is introduced, adapted to the lower circulation of the virus but focused on protecting vulnerable groups.
Why does it matter?
Vaccines reduce the risk of severe complications, hospitalization, and death. Flu causes thousands of hospital admissions every year in older adults and vulnerable people. During the 2023-2024 season, the ISCIII reported more than 20,000 severe hospitalizations due to flu, with the highest impact in those over 64 and people with chronic diseases. Flu also contributes significantly to excess winter mortality, especially among the elderly and frail.
COVID-19, although with lower circulation in 2025, still poses a risk for immunocompromised people, adults over 70, and those with weakened defenses.
Who is it for?
The vaccines target the following high-risk groups:
